STEPPING INTO BRUCE WEBER'S WORLD: A JOURNEY THROUGH MY EDUCATION
My friends will confirm that I love photography. Black-and-white portrait photography especially. So it is my immense luck that this year, a show by one of the greats has made it to my home town of Prague. Yes if you’ve ever wanted to get up close and personal with the legendary work of Bruce Weber, My Education at Galerie Hlavního Města Prahy offers the perfect opportunity.
The show spans six decades of Weber's career and invites you into his world—a place where high fashion meets intimate moments, and where emotion and light take center stage.
From the moment you step in, you’re treated to a visual feast. Over 250 of Weber’s most iconic photographs, including, on the lower floor, the timeless black-and-white portraits of cultural icons like Nelson Mandela, Zaha Hadid, and, from the fashion and celebrity world, Kate Moss, Eva Herzigová and many others. But Weber shows us also more personal, candid shots of families from the regular walks of life across the cities and countries he has visited. Regardless of whether you are seeing a fashion model or a child from a Vietnamese orphanage, you are taken by the dignified beauty of the shot.
Together, the photographs give you a full retrospective of Weber’s work. Although he is best known for his fashion photography for Vogue and GQ, you get to see also his more intimate, lesser-known projects, be it photos of his many dogs, to shots of the US Olympics team and, because we are in Prague, after all, also a series of portraits with Heath Ledger, taken here during the filming of A Knight's Tale.
The show also demonstrates Weber’s multi-disciplinary talents through a selection of his short films and music videos (I will have Pet Shop Boys stuck in my head for some time to come!), reminding us that his artistry isn’t limited to photography. The curation, led by Helena Musilová, smartly underscores this, tying together Weber’s many creative facets in a cohesive, immersive experience.
If you find yourself in Prague, this is a must-see. Bruce Weber’s My Education is more than just an exhibition—it’s an invitation to slow down, look deeper, and appreciate the quiet beauty in both the extraordinary and the everyday.
