GETTING TANGLED IN CHIHARU SHIOTA'S "UNSETTLED SOUL" AT KUNSTHALLE PRAHA

black thread wrapped around a piano

If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to walk into a dream, Chiharu Shiota’s Unsettled Soul at Kunsthalle Praha will give you a pretty good idea. From the moment you step in, you’re surrounded by her iconic web-like installations—endless threads that seem to pull you into a story that’s as much about you as it is about her art. It’s beautiful, a little haunting, and utterly unforgettable.

Shiota, who is showing in the Czech Republic for the first time, has a way of making you feel connected to something bigger. Her labyrinths of red thread stretch across entire rooms, wrapping around metal frames shaped like houses. These threads make you pause and think: What does "home" mean to me? Where do I feel I belong?

One piece that I truly liked was “In Silence”. Imagine a burned piano surrounded by empty chairs, all engulfed in black threads. The silence in the room is almost heavy. It’s about loss, memory, and the things we carry with us even when they’re no longer physically there.

This exhibition isn’t just a collection of pretty installations; it’s an experience. It makes you think, feel, and remember. And isn’t that what the best art does? If you’re in Prague (or planning to be), make time for this. The show runs until April 2025, so there’s no excuse to miss it!

Additionally, my visit to the Kampa Museum for the From Lines to Matter exhibition offered an in-depth look at monumental paintings inspired by ancient myths. Happy art-hopping!
