A COAL MILL PROVES A PERFECT MATCH FOR CONTEMPORARY ART
Spectacular contemporary art spaces in large cities are nothing new. Prague has been getting more and more of those and that makes my heart happy. Leave the city limits, however, and your choices become much more limited.
That’s why I am thrilled to have discovered (thanks to some well informed friends) Uhelny Mlyn. This small contemporary gallery is hiding in plain sight a mere 30-minute drive from Prague, in the old factory zone in the town of Libcice. Reminiscent of one of my favorites, the Dia:Beacon gallery outside of New York City, the gallery has kept the original industrial building feel but thoroughly modernized it and created a light, airy space that forms the perfect backdrop for the contemporary, thought-provoking art that is shown within its walls.
The current show is especially well done. It is showing the site-specific installation of architectural (dis)assembled objects by architect/painter Michal Skoda, accompanied by his contemplative geometric black and white drawings that have been carefully placed in the otherwise minimalist setting of the gallery’s first floor. The gallery owners instinctively understand the almost meditative qualities of the work and encourage you to give yourselves time—standing, sitting or even lying down—pondering the meaning behind the works in the show that is aptly named “Delimitation.” My friend and I both did - and loved every minute. The show runs through the start of September and I would definitely recommend it.
So, take a quick trip away from Prague. This place is worth it and you will enjoy it!
