TIMELESS TIME OF VINCENT PETERS
Those who know me, know that even when traveling to a place loved for its history —say, Rome— I will find my way to contemporary art. Or, in this case, “timeless” art, as the title of the fabulous show of Vincent Peters’ suggests.
Having gifted myself a brief solo visit to Rome on short notice, I didn’t do as much planning and research as I normally do. So, it was by a happy accident that I stumbled upon this show at the Palazzo Bonaparte, with barely a couple of days left before it closed. But, once I saw a few photos, I knew I had to go. As a side benefit, an air conditioned palazzo felt like a wonderful reprieve from the “hell’s front porch” outside (yes, Rome has it too, just like New York!)
Entering the show, you are transported to a relaxing, calm space. Dark walls that draw your attention to the stars of the show - the black and white photographs displayed in large format in several rooms. An occasional philosophical quote from the artist himself and music that perfectly matches the scene… Admire, peek, explore…lose yourself in the timeless time. Portrait after portrait, dreamy scene after scene.
Or, if you prefer, step into the cheeky mirror room where the photos envelop you, reflecting from every angle and every wall. And the artist plays with your eyes here, too, by showing images that are reflections themselves. An infinity room begging for your attention. Will you linger?
Peters photographs famous faces but gives his images a more intimate feel. Sometimes it is the setting - catching a face through a reflection of a make up mirror, sometimes it is a gentle nude that bares but doesn’t scream for attention… subtle, clever, captivating. I hope that the Palazzo Bonaparte is not this beautiful show’s last stop.
